Isle of Skye Tour

Looking for the perfect tour to the magical and misty Isle of Skye? Maybe you have ancestral connections to the island or you’re up for exploring its untamed coastal scenery and breath-taking Cullin mountain range? Whatever the reason, IT Tours has a fantastic 10-hour tour that can guide you through the most iconic sights and the lesser-known gems that the road to Skye has to offer, as well as helping you to discover what makes Skye a must-see for visitors to Scotland from far and wide.

Loch Ness

The start of your tour begins with a visit to the beautiful waters of Loch Ness. Loch Ness is home to Nessie - the elusive Loch Ness Monster. Many people have searched for evidence of Nessie’s presence ever since her first reported sighting by Saint Columba in 565AD, but Nessie has eluded many would-be witnesses – from scientists to loch-side fanatics holding vigil onshore. Will you be one of the lucky few who catch a glimpse of Nessie swimming through the waters of one of the largest and deepest expanses of water in the UK? The Loch itself is a marvel as it contains more water than all the lakes of England and Wales combined! With its dramatic scenery, great adventure sports, and nearby Lighthouses and castles, it’s no wonder Nessie has chosen to make the Loch her home.

Urquhart Castle

On the bank of Loch Ness sits Urquhart Castle, a 13th Century fort that became one of many fortifications to feel the effects of the Jacobite Uprising in the 17th century. The castle has a distinctly Highland heritage. It is built on the shore where St Columba is said to have worked miracles in the 6th century and is the home to where acts of fearless defiance provided inspiration during the Wars of Independence. You can learn more about Urquhart Castle’s stories through a remarkable collection of artefacts left by its residents and through historic replicas, including a full-sized, working trebuchet! The cultural significance of Urquhart castle to the Highlands cannot be overstated and as well as being able to experience a glimpse into medieval life in Scotland, the stunning scenes that can be enjoyed over Loch Ness from the lofty heights of Grant Tower are something that you will never be able to forget.

Eilean Donan Castle

As we travel deeper into rural Scotland, we make a stop at one of the most iconic spots in all the Highlands: Eilean Donan Castle. This fully restored 13th Century castle sits on a small island at the point where three lochs meet - Loch Duich, Loch Alsh, and Loch Long. Originally built as a defence point to keep the citizens of Kintail safe from roving Viking attacks, it was used by the Jacobites during the Rebellion until it was destroyed by Government forces in 1719 where it lay in silent ruin for 200 years before being painstakingly restored in the early 1900s. Eilean Donan Castle is of the most majestic and recognisable sights in the Highlands and is well worth a stop on your tour of Skye. With its extensive range of Jacobean artefacts, displays of weapons and fine art, this is a great place to learn more about a lost Highland way of life, as well as marvel at its breathtaking setting.
