This fully restored 13th Century castle sits on a small island at the point where three lochs meet - Loch Duich, Loch Alsh, and Loch Long. Originally built as a defence point to keep the citizens of Kintail safe from roving Viking attacks, it was used by the Jacobites during the Rebellion until it was destroyed by Government forces in 1719 where it lay in silent ruin for 200 years before being painstakingly restored in the early 1900s. Eilean Donan Castle is of the most majestic and recognisable sights in the Highlands and is well worth a stop on your tour of Skye. With its extensive range of Jacobean artefacts, displays of weapons and fine art, this is a great place to learn more about a lost Highland way of life, as well as marvel at its breathtaking setting.
